Technique and Equipment information:

  • Virtually all my images are taken with medium format cameras on slide film. Presently I am using Fuji Provia 100F slide film and using a Pentax 67 camera. The film is 2 1/4 in. by 2 3/4 in. Occasionally I shoot an image with a Nikon D70, a digital camera.
  • I scan my film at 4000 DPI and 16 bits, which produces a file of 510 megabytes. This is a huge amount of information and allows a large print to be made without quality loss. The photographs I have taken with the Nikon D70 are much more limited in size.
  • After scanning the film I spend two to three hours cleaning up the image and removing things like dust picked up by the scan. I do basic color and contrast adjustments with the object being to produce prints that are as close to the slide (and what I saw in the field) as possible.
  • In 2002 I switched from making prints in the darkroom to using an Epson 7600 inkjet printer. This printer allows me to make prints that will not begin to fade for at least 85 years. I am very happy with these prints and with the ability to eliminate the time consuming step of making test strips to get the color and density correct on each trip to the darkroom.
